About Mortlake

Mortlake sits on a bend of the Thames and has been the finishing point of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race since 1845, when the race first ran its current 4.25-mile course from Putney; huge crowds still gather along the towpath near Chiswick Bridge each year to watch the finish. The area's other defining landmark is its former brewery site, whose seven-storey maltings building, built in 1903, remains a familiar sight for race spectators on the riverbank. Mortlake also has a notable Elizabethan connection: the scholar and mathematician John Dee, adviser to Queen Elizabeth I, lived and worked here from 1565 to 1595, housing his library and conducting experiments by the Thames. Mortlake station, on the Waterloo to Reading line, opened on 27 July 1846 and remains the area's main rail link.
