About Parsons Green

Parsons Green takes its name from the parsonage, or rectory, that once stood on the western side of the triangular green at its centre — references to the green go back to at least the 14th century, and by the early 1700s it was described as an area favoured by "gentry and persons of quality". The old rectory was demolished in 1882 and St Dionis Church was built on the site; the green itself once had a pond, filled in during the 19th century after its feeding spring was disrupted by drainage works for the King's Road. The area also takes in Eel Brook Common, a 14-acre open space nearby. Parsons Green station, on the District line, opened on 1 March 1880 as part of the Metropolitan District Railway's extension from West Brompton to Putney Bridge, and was originally named Fulham Road before being renamed Parsons Green in 1902.
