About Roehampton
Roehampton developed as a leafy Georgian retreat for wealthy Londoners after Putney Bridge opened in 1729, and its village core still holds onto that character — the King's Head Inn at the foot of Roehampton High Street and the Montague Arms on Medfield Street both have 17th-century origins, and Roehampton House, built in 1710, survives today as private flats. The area is bordered by Richmond Park, and Queen Mary's Hospital opened here in 1915 to treat soldiers wounded in the First World War. Roehampton is equally known for the Alton Estate, one of the largest and most architecturally ambitious post-war housing developments in London, chosen by the London County Council's architects' department in 1951 and built in two phases — the Scandinavian-influenced Alton East from 1958 and the Corbusier-inspired Alton West from 1959, the latter including the Grade II*-listed Highcliffe towers.
