About Wandsworth

Wandsworth takes its name from the River Wandle, which meets the Thames here and gave the settlement its Domesday Book name of Wandesorde in 1086, meaning the enclosure of a man called Waendel. For over four centuries the town centre was dominated by Young & Co's Ram Brewery, which brewed on the site between the town and the river until production stopped in 2006, with Sambrook's Brewery later announcing plans to move into the redeveloped site. All Saints' Church, with origins in the 13th century, and the Wandsworth Quaker Meeting House, built in 1778 and the oldest surviving Quaker meeting house in Greater London, are among the area's older landmarks. Wandsworth Common lies at the top of East Hill, close to the row of grand townhouses locally nicknamed "the Toast Rack", and Wandsworth Town station connects the area to London Victoria and Waterloo.
