About Earlsfield

Earlsfield takes its name from a house called Earlsfield, once owned by the Davis family, whose land was used for the railway station that opened here in April 1884 on condition it carried the house's name. Before that, the area formed part of the historic manor of Garratt in Wandsworth parish, and in the early 1800s the Surrey Iron Railway, one of the first railways in the country, ran along Garratt Lane. Suburban growth followed the arrival of the London and South Western Railway in 1838, accelerating sharply after the 1884 station opened. The result was a working-class suburb of medium-sized terraced streets, much of which survives today, giving Earlsfield its recognisable residential character within the wider Wandsworth borough.
